Center?

1989

The work is entitled “Circle?” The question mark brings into focus the large relief plus sign that covers most of the painting. Yet the painted image does not follow or emphasize the plus, rather it completely ignores it. The plus is camouflaged by the painted images. It is hidden. Some people may not notice it is there upon a quick viewing. The movement of the painting is circular with the focal point in the center of the painting and the plus. Two fields are tugging at each other: the hidden plus is in relief, and the paint itself has an independent existence. Both struggle with and share the same center.

Built up relief images.
